Verbal Bullying Workshop: What’s In a Name?
Verbal Bullying...
It’s important to realize that words shape our beliefs and
impact our actions. Insults take many forms. They all hurt.
Racial, ethnic, and sexual slurs are particularly abusive
because they reflect a history of oppression, therefore
there is more power to inflict damage with such slurs. Do
children need to be reminded that they are members of a
denigrated class?
What’s the problem with name calling anyway?
At least it isn’t hitting! Well, hurt occurs in several directions
when name-calling occurs. Obviously the person being
labeled is hurt. He or she is reduced to a negative stereotype.
The stereotype invoked relates to a group that is
considered undesirable or inferior, maybe even despicable
or hated: otherwise the name-caller would not have used it.
All the societal prejudice associated with that group
enforces the potency of that label. It’s chosen to hurt.
Learn the skills and get the tools you need to protect the youth you work with and stop verbal bullying!
